Food Truck Business in Dubai: A Practical Owner's Guide

Permits, VAT-inclusive pricing, Apple Pay, Arabic and English menus, the weekly rhythm and summer heat: what running a food truck in Dubai really takes.

A food truck business in Dubai can do very well, but it runs on a different calendar and rulebook than a truck in the US or Pakistan. You will need the right licences and approvals, VAT-inclusive prices in AED, payments that include Apple Pay and cards, menus in Arabic and English, and a plan for summer. This guide covers each one, plus how GetFoodTruckPOS handles AED and VAT for you.

A quick honest note: rules in the UAE change and differ between emirates. Treat this as a starting map, and confirm every permit and tax step with the authority named before you spend money.

What permits does a food truck in Dubai need?

Most Dubai trucks deal with four kinds of approval. The names and steps below are a guide only, so check the current requirements with each authority directly.

Approval What it covers Who usually handles it in Dubai
Trade licence Permission to run the business activity Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), or a free zone if that suits your setup
Food safety approval Truck layout, equipment, hygiene, food handling, staff training Dubai Municipality (food safety)
Vehicle approval The conversion and registration of the truck itself Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)
Location or event permission Where you can park and trade Land owner, master developer or event organizer, sometimes with an event permit through DET; Dubai Police may be involved for some public events

How to approach permits without wasting money

  1. Talk to the authorities before you buy or convert a truck. Layout and equipment rules can decide whether a used truck is a bargain or a liability.
  2. Ask about the trade licence activity first. It affects what you can sell and where.
  3. Get the food safety requirements in writing and design the truck around them.
  4. Plan locations early. A licensed truck with nowhere to park makes no money. Talk to truck parks, event organizers and corporate sites while the paperwork is moving.
  5. Keep copies of everything on your phone. Organizers and inspectors ask for them at events.

If you are also looking at Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, they have their own authorities. In Abu Dhabi, food safety sits with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA); in Sharjah, Sharjah Municipality is a common starting point. Our pages for food trucks in Abu Dhabi and food trucks in Sharjah cover how the POS fits each market.

How does VAT work for a Dubai food truck?

Under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, VAT has applied at a standard rate of 5% since 1 January 2018, administered by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). Food truck sales are generally standard-rated.

VAT-inclusive pricing means the price on your menu is the full price the customer pays, with the 5% VAT already inside it. A shawarma priced at a round number on the menu stays that round number at the window, and your system works out how much of it is VAT for your records and your return.

UAE rules generally expect prices shown to consumers to include VAT, which is why this matters for menu boards and your online store.

Do you need to register for VAT?

It depends on your taxable sales. The FTA sets mandatory and voluntary registration thresholds, and if you are registered you need a Tax Registration Number (TRN) and must issue tax invoices with specific details. Check the current thresholds and invoice requirements with the FTA or a registered tax agent. Do not guess; penalties for late registration can be expensive.

How GetFoodTruckPOS handles AED and VAT

GetFoodTruckPOS supports multiple currencies and tax rates. For a Dubai truck you would typically:

  1. Set your business currency to AED.
  2. Create a VAT tax rate matching the FTA standard rate and set prices as tax-inclusive.
  3. Set up your receipt layout with the details your tax agent says you need, such as your business name and TRN if you are registered.
  4. Run the tax report at the end of each period to see VAT collected, and export it for your accountant.

The help article set up taxes by country shows the exact steps, including how currency, tax and date formats work in each market. GetFoodTruckPOS records the tax; filing your return stays with you or your tax agent.

How do customers pay at Dubai food trucks?

Cards and digital wallets are everyday payments in Dubai, and Apple Pay is common at the window. Cash is still used, especially at markets and by some older customers and visitors, so most trucks take all three.

Payment How it works with GetFoodTruckPOS Tip
Debit and credit cards Charged on your processor’s reader, recorded as card Ask your bank or processor which readers they support in the UAE
Apple Pay and other wallets Contactless through the same reader Keep the reader where customers can tap without reaching
Cash (AED) Recorded in the cash register with a float Keep enough small notes and coins for change

GetFoodTruckPOS works with your processor: we do not process cards and take 0% of card sales. Our guide to food truck card readers covers what to ask your processor.

What is the weekly rhythm for a Dubai truck?

Since the UAE federal government moved to a Monday to Friday working week with a Friday half day in January 2022, many residents treat Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, though private-sector schedules vary.

For trucks, that usually means:

  • Weekday lunches at offices, business districts and corporate events.
  • Friday busy after midday prayers and into the evening, with families out.
  • Saturday and Sunday strong for markets, beaches and outdoor events in the cooler months.
  • Evenings are often the main trade, especially when it is hot.

During Ramadan, the rhythm changes again, with trade moving toward iftar and late evening. Check the current guidance on daytime food service from your authority and venue each year.

How do you handle the Dubai summer?

Treat summer as a different business, not a slow version of winter. Daytime outdoor trade drops in the hottest months, and many outdoor events and seasonal venues pause until the weather cools.

Trucks that keep earning in summer usually:

  • Shift to evening slots and late-night spots.
  • Look for shaded, indoor or air-conditioned venues, such as malls and corporate campuses that allow trucks.
  • Push private bookings and catering, with quotations prepared in the POS.
  • Add cold drinks, desserts and items that hold up in heat.
  • Protect staff with shade, water and proper breaks, and protect devices from overheating. Phones and readers left in direct sun can shut down mid-service.

The cooler months, often from autumn to spring, are when most outdoor events, beach spots and seasonal attractions run. Plan your stock, staff and marketing around that peak.

Which event formats work for Dubai trucks?

Dubai has a strong events culture. Formats that suit trucks include:

  • Food truck parks and destinations with permanent or rotating truck spots.
  • Seasonal attractions and festivals in the cooler months.
  • Beach and waterfront areas where vending is permitted.
  • Community and weekend markets, often with a food court of trucks.
  • Corporate events and private parties, booked as catering.
  • Sports and fitness events, where quick, portable food sells.

Vendor terms change each season, so check fees, revenue shares and rules with each organizer. Always ask about signal and power, and test your connection before the first day. Our Dubai food truck POS page lists the setup most trucks use.

Should your menu be in Arabic and English?

Yes, for most Dubai trucks. Your customers include Emiratis, long-term residents from many countries and tourists, and a clear bilingual menu is faster to read than a long one in one language.

GetFoodTruckPOS can run its interface and receipts in Arabic and English, and you can edit translations so your dish names read the way you want. The languages page explains interface, receipts and online store languages.

Tips for bilingual menus:

  • Keep item names short in both languages so buttons and receipts stay clean.
  • Use the same order in both languages.
  • Put prices in AED with the same format everywhere.
  • Mark spice level and common allergens clearly; customers appreciate it in any language.

How do Dubai customers find your truck?

Mostly through Instagram, WhatsApp and word of mouth, plus event listings. WhatsApp is a primary channel for many UAE businesses, so share your Today’s spot link as a WhatsApp status each morning and in your business profile. A short morning routine of one post and one status is enough for most trucks.

What does setup look like on day one?

Once your licences are moving, the POS side is quick. Sign up, add the truck as a location with a register, set AED and the VAT rate, add your menu items with Arabic and English names, add staff with PINs, and connect your processor’s reader as your processor instructs. Then ring a test sale, check the receipt layout and post your first Today’s spot. Most of the work is in the menu, so have your item list, prices and photos ready before you start.

What to do next

Write down your target locations for the next cooler season, then confirm the permit steps with DET, Dubai Municipality and the RTA. When you are ready to set up AED, VAT-inclusive prices and Arabic receipts, read how it works or see UAE plans on the pricing page.

Questions on this topic

Expect to need a trade licence for the food truck activity, food safety approval for the vehicle and how you handle food, vehicle approval for the conversion, and permission to trade at each location or event. In Dubai, the Department of Economy and Tourism, Dubai Municipality and the Roads and Transport Authority are the bodies usually involved. Requirements change, so confirm the current list with each authority before you buy or convert a truck.

Prices shown to consumers in the UAE are generally expected to include VAT, so a menu price should be the price the customer pays. The standard VAT rate has been 5% since 2018, administered by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). Whether you must register depends on your taxable sales, so check the current thresholds with the FTA or a registered tax agent. GetFoodTruckPOS can run tax-inclusive pricing in AED.

GetFoodTruckPOS works with your processor, and Apple Pay is accepted through your processor's contactless reader in the same way a contactless card is. You keep your own processor and reader, and we take 0% of card sales. Ask your processor or bank which readers they offer in the UAE, then record the payment in GetFoodTruckPOS so it appears in your register and reports.

Yes. GetFoodTruckPOS can run its interface and receipts in Arabic, English and many other languages, and you can edit translations to match how you name your dishes. Many Dubai trucks show both languages on the menu board and online store because their customers include Emiratis, long-term residents from many countries and tourists. Keep item names short in both languages so buttons and receipts stay readable.

It can be, but plan it as a different business. Daytime outdoor trade drops sharply in the hottest months, and many outdoor events pause until the weather cools. Trucks that do well in summer often move to evening slots, indoor or shaded venues, private bookings and delivery-friendly items. Cold drinks and desserts sell better, and staff need shade, water and breaks, so plan your menu and hours around the heat.

Food trucks usually trade at approved food truck parks, community events, beach and waterfront areas where permitted, festivals, corporate sites and private events. Each location normally needs permission from the land owner or event organizer plus any authority approval. Good names to research include seasonal events in the cooler months and dedicated truck parks, but check current vendor terms with each organizer, as they change each season.
