Food truck POS for American trucks, trailers and carts

GetFoodTruckPOS runs on the phone or tablet you already own, works with the card processor you already use, and adds the sales tax your state and city require. You ring orders at the window, close out at night, and see what sold by item, by staff member and by truck.

The food truck scene in USA

American food trucks run on a mix of regular weekday spots, weekend events and private bookings. A typical week might be office parks and brewery lots on weekdays, a farmers market or festival on Saturday, and a wedding or corporate lunch in between. Every one of those has a different crowd size and a different idea of how fast the line should move.

Cards and tap payments carry most of the volume at US trucks, but cash has not gone away, especially at late-night spots and smaller markets. Owners want a POS that handles both cleanly, keeps card fees between them and their processor, and gives an honest close-out at the end of a long day.

Most US trucks prep at a licensed commissary, and many grow from one truck to two or three. That makes stock transfers from the commissary, per-truck reports and per-truck menus more useful than restaurant features like table maps.

How customers pay in USA

  • Cards via your processorTake cards on the reader from the processor you already use, then record the sale as Card. We take 0% of card sales.
  • Apple Pay and Google PayAccepted on your processor's contactless reader like any tap card, and recorded as Card or as its own method.
  • CashOpen with a float, record cash in and out, and close with a denomination count that shows expected versus counted.
  • Custom methodsAdd methods such as a payment app or an invoice paid later, so they show separately in reports.

Tax

US sales tax is set by states, and often by counties and cities on top, and the rules for prepared food differ from place to place. Many trucks owe a combined state and local rate that depends on where they sell, so confirm your rates and filing schedule with your state revenue department or an accountant.

How the software handles it

Add each rate under Settings, combine them into a tax group per city if needed, and set whether prices include tax or have it added at the window. The tax report totals what you collected by period and by truck, ready to hand to whoever files. GetFoodTruckPOS applies and reports tax; it does not file returns.

Permits

Food trucks in the US are usually licensed by the county or city health department, with extra city business licenses, fire inspections for propane, and commissary rules on top. Requirements and fees differ by city and change over time, so confirm current rules with your local health department and city licensing office before you trade.

Signal

GetFoodTruckPOS needs a data connection to ring sales. Most trucks run it on the phone's 4G or 5G or a pocket hotspot. Keep a second SIM from a different carrier, test signal at any new spot before service, and if signal dies mid-rush, take cash and enter those sales when it returns. Some processors' readers can store card payments offline; ask yours.

Food trucks in USA: questions

Yes, it works alongside the reader and processor you already have. You ring the sale in GetFoodTruckPOS, take the card on your processor's reader, and record it as Card. Your card money settles from your processor as it does today. Because we do not process cards, we take 0% of your card sales, and you can switch processors without switching POS.

You enter the rates that apply to you and the software applies them to every sale. If you owe a state rate plus a local rate, combine them into a tax group, and make one group per city if your truck moves between tax areas. The tax report then totals what you collected. Confirm your rates with your state revenue department or accountant, since we apply tax but do not file it.

No, the POS needs a data connection to ring sales, and we do not offer an offline mode. Run it on the phone's 4G or 5G or a pocket hotspot, keep a backup SIM from a different carrier, and test signal before service. If signal drops in a rush, take cash and enter those sales when it returns. Ask your processor whether your reader can store card payments offline.

No. It runs in the browser on any phone, tablet or laptop, and there is a mobile app too. Most trucks use one phone or tablet at the window, a Bluetooth receipt printer if they want paper receipts, and their processor's card reader. Kitchen printers and customer displays are optional. See the hardware page for what works.

Yes, on the Fleet plan. Each truck is its own location with its own register, menu and prices if you want them. Your commissary can be a location too, so you can transfer stock to each truck in the morning. Reports show each truck separately and all trucks together, which makes it easy to see which rig and which spots earn their keep.

Yes. Your online store builds itself from your menu, and you can post today's spot on it from your phone: where you are parked, your hours and a short note. Share the store link in your Instagram bio and Google Business profile, and regulars can check the spot and the live menu in one place. Sold-out items drop off the store on their own.

No. Plans are month to month and you can cancel any time. There is a free trial with no card needed, so you can run a full event weekend and a few weeks of regular spots before deciding. If you leave, you can export your sales and product data. Current plan prices are on the pricing page.

Yes. You can create a quotation for a catering booking, send it to the client, and turn it into a sale when it is confirmed. Deposits and the balance can be taken as split payments. Many owners also add the Full Rig bundle, which includes a managed website and marketing automation for catering lead capture and follow-up.
