Food Truck POS in Pakistan: Cash, JazzCash and Sales Tax

Running a food truck in Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad? How to handle cash, JazzCash and Easypaisa, provincial sales tax, load-shedding and Urdu menus.

A food truck POS in Pakistan has to do a few things very well: count cash fast, record JazzCash, Easypaisa and bank transfers alongside cards, apply the right provincial sales tax, keep working on mobile data through load-shedding, and print or share receipts in Urdu and English. GetFoodTruckPOS is built to handle each of these on a phone, without a counter computer.

This guide covers how the truck scene in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad works, which payment methods to take, how sales tax is split between provinces, and how to keep selling when the power goes.

What does the food truck scene look like in Pakistan?

Food trucks have grown into a regular part of evening life in Pakistan’s big cities. They tend to cluster in the same places every night, which makes regulars and word of mouth very powerful.

City Where trucks often trade Typical rhythm
Karachi Seafront and Clifton areas such as Do Darya and Boat Basin, plus DHA Late evenings and night, busiest at weekends
Lahore Gulberg, MM Alam Road surroundings, DHA truck parks Evenings, strong on weekends and holidays
Islamabad Sectors such as F-6 and F-7, park areas like Lake View Evenings, family crowds at weekends

Locations and parks change as authorities and landowners change rules, so check with the organizer or the area administration before you plan a spot. Our city pages for Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad cover local setup.

The weekly rhythm is evening-heavy. Friday prayers slow early afternoon trade, Saturday and Sunday nights are often the busiest, and Ramadan moves everything toward iftar and sehri.

How do customers pay at Pakistani food trucks?

Cash still leads, but mobile wallets and bank transfers have grown fast, and card payments are common at trucks with a younger, urban crowd.

Payment method How to record it in GetFoodTruckPOS Check at close
Cash (Rs) Cash register with an opening float Count by denomination
JazzCash Custom payment method “JazzCash” Match against your JazzCash statement
Easypaisa Custom payment method “Easypaisa” Match against your Easypaisa statement
Bank transfer or Raast Custom payment method “Bank transfer” Match against your bank app
Debit and credit cards Card, through your bank’s or processor’s reader Match against the processor report

A custom payment method is a payment type you name yourself in the POS, such as “JazzCash” or “Easypaisa”, so sales paid that way are counted separately in your reports. GetFoodTruckPOS does not move the money; the wallet or bank does. The POS records how each sale was paid so your close-out shows exactly what to expect in each account.

Tips for wallet payments at the window

  1. Display your wallet number or QR code clearly and in large print.
  2. Ask customers to show the confirmation on their phone before handing over food.
  3. Ring the sale with the matching payment method right away, not later.
  4. Check the wallet app for the day’s total at close, and compare it with the POS report.
  5. Ask JazzCash and Easypaisa about merchant accounts, which can separate business payments from personal ones.

For card payments, GetFoodTruckPOS works with your processor. We do not process cards and take 0% of card sales. Talk to your bank about merchant services and readers.

Making cash fast

Because cash is the biggest share for most trucks, cash speed decides line speed. Open each day with a float that has plenty of small notes. Keep notes sorted by value in the drawer so making change takes seconds. Our guide to speeding up the food truck line has more. At close, count by denomination and compare expected against counted cash in the register.

How does sales tax work for a Pakistani food truck?

Sales tax on services, including restaurant and food services, has mostly been collected by provincial revenue authorities since the 18th Amendment to the Constitution in 2010 moved that power to the provinces. So the rules depend on where you trade:

  • Karachi and the rest of Sindh: Sindh Revenue Board (SRB).
  • Lahore and the rest of Punjab: Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA).
  • Islamabad Capital Territory: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan: their own provincial revenue authorities.

Rates, registration thresholds and special rules change, and some provinces have offered different treatment for payments made by card or digital means. Some authorities also run invoice monitoring schemes for restaurants. Confirm what applies to your truck with your revenue authority or a tax adviser before you set prices. GetFoodTruckPOS does not file returns for you, and you should not assume it connects to any authority’s monitoring system; ask us first if that applies to you.

How to set it up in GetFoodTruckPOS

  1. Set your currency to PKR so prices show with the Rs prefix.
  2. Create the tax rate your revenue authority confirms for your business.
  3. Choose whether menu prices include tax or have tax added. Many Pakistani menus show “plus applicable sales tax”.
  4. If you trade in more than one province, use tax groups or separate locations so each truck uses the right rate.
  5. Run the tax report at the end of each period and share it with your accountant.

The help article set up taxes by country walks through each step.

How do you keep selling during load-shedding?

Load-shedding is scheduled or unscheduled power cuts, common in parts of Pakistan, especially in summer. For a food truck it mostly hits Wi-Fi routers and any equipment plugged into shop power, while mobile networks usually keep running on their own backup.

That makes the phone with mobile data your most reliable register. GetFoodTruckPOS is a hosted app that needs a data connection, so plan for data, not power alone:

  1. Run the POS on mobile data, not a router plugged into a wall.
  2. Carry a second SIM on a different network, in a dual-SIM phone or a battery pocket hotspot.
  3. Keep a power bank big enough to charge your phone and a portable printer.
  4. Test signal at each new spot before your first night there; crowded areas can slow data.
  5. If data drops completely, take cash and write each sale down, then enter those sales the moment the connection returns. The cash count at close catches any you missed.

Should menus and receipts be in Urdu?

For many trucks, yes, at least in both Urdu and English. Your customers read both, and a clear bilingual menu board is faster than a long one in one language.

GetFoodTruckPOS can run the interface and receipts in Urdu, English and many other languages, and you can edit translations so dish names read correctly. Tips:

  • Keep item names short so buttons and receipts stay readable.
  • Test your thermal printer with an Urdu receipt before service. Some printers render Urdu script better than others.
  • Share digital receipts on WhatsApp when the customer prefers, which also saves paper.
  • Show prices with the same rupee format on the board, receipt and online store.

Which permits will you need?

Expect several layers, and check each one for your area:

  • Municipal or development authority for parking and trading spots, such as city corporations and development authorities in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.
  • Provincial food authority for hygiene and food handling, such as the Punjab Food Authority or the Sindh Food Authority, and the Islamabad food authority for the capital.
  • Cantonment boards or housing authorities if you trade inside their areas.
  • Vehicle registration and fitness for the truck itself.

Rules differ between cities and change often. Visit the relevant offices before you buy or convert a vehicle.

How do Pakistani customers find trucks?

WhatsApp and Instagram, mostly, plus word of mouth in the same food streets. Post today’s spot every evening as a WhatsApp status and an Instagram story, both pointing to the Today’s spot post on your online store. Customers can see the menu in rupees and, where you turn it on, order ahead for pickup.

What does a typical night look like with GetFoodTruckPOS?

Here is how a two-person truck in Lahore or Karachi might run an evening:

  1. Before leaving the commissary: check stock on the phone and transfer the night’s stock from the commissary location to the truck.
  2. At the spot: open the cash register with the float, post today’s spot as a WhatsApp status and Instagram story, and test data on both SIMs.
  3. During service: ring orders from the quick menu, mark items sold out as they run out, and record each payment as cash, JazzCash, Easypaisa, transfer or card.
  4. If data drops: take cash, note each sale, and enter them as soon as the connection is back.
  5. At close: count cash by denomination, compare wallet and bank totals against their apps, record expenses such as fuel and gas cylinders, and write a short note about the night.

That routine keeps the money side clear even on the busiest weekend nights.

What to do next

Write down how your customers paid last week: cash, JazzCash, Easypaisa, transfer or card. Then confirm your sales tax rate with your provincial authority. When you are ready, see how it works or check plans in rupees on the pricing page.

Questions on this topic

The best food truck POS in Pakistan is one that runs on a phone with mobile data, handles cash quickly, records JazzCash, Easypaisa and bank transfers, and prints or shares receipts in Urdu and English. GetFoodTruckPOS does all of that as a hosted app, with prices in rupees and sales tax set for your province. It needs a data connection, so pair it with a backup SIM.

Yes. Customers can pay to your JazzCash or Easypaisa merchant account or number, and you record that payment in GetFoodTruckPOS as a custom payment method named JazzCash or Easypaisa. Your end-of-day report then shows wallet payments separately from cash and card, which makes it easy to check them against your wallet statement. Ask each provider about merchant accounts and their charges.

Sales tax on restaurant and food services is mostly collected by provincial revenue authorities, so it depends on where you trade. In Karachi that means the Sindh Revenue Board, in Lahore the Punjab Revenue Authority, and in Islamabad the Federal Board of Revenue for the capital territory. Rates, registration rules and any card-payment concessions change, so confirm with your authority or a tax adviser.

It works as long as your device has battery and a data connection. Load-shedding usually knocks out Wi-Fi routers, not mobile networks, so run GetFoodTruckPOS on your phone's mobile data or a battery-powered pocket hotspot. Keep a power bank for the phone and printer. If data drops completely, take cash, note each sale and enter them when the connection returns.

Yes. GetFoodTruckPOS can run its interface and receipts in Urdu and English, and you can edit translations so dish names read correctly. Test your thermal printer with an Urdu receipt before service, because some printers handle Urdu script better than others. Many trucks show both languages on the menu and online store, with prices in rupees in the same format everywhere.

In most cities, yes. Expect to deal with the local municipal or development authority for where you park, the provincial food authority for hygiene, and sometimes a cantonment board or housing authority if you trade in those areas. The exact rules differ between Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad and change often, so check with the authorities for your area before you buy or convert a vehicle.
